About

Q: What Is Bushcraft?

A: Being at one with the natural world around you, using crafts that enable you to be more in tuned in and to move freely and with minimum impact on your natural environment…

What is the ‘Path Of The Paddle?’

Path of the Paddle is the title of Bill Mason‘s 1st Book, followed by another classic “Song of the Paddle An Illustrated Guide to Wilderness Camping”. These are inspirational works and must-read books for canoeing and canoe camping expeditions. This site is about Canoeing AND Bushcraft, in particular canoeing and wild camping, and only takes some small inspiration from the books. We love both the books and videos by Bill Mason – His spirit of canoeing was infectious. Choice of the name was also in hommage to the forum for Open Canoe paddlers ‘SOTP’ at http://www.songofthepaddle.co.uk , the name taken from Mason’s second book and a fantastic resource which we encourage you to join in with contributing trip reports and advice where you can.

This site is all about our trips, reviews, gear, advice (probably best not to follow this :P) and much more. We welcome any feedback and our mission is to contribute what we can to a community interested in following where their own and our collective ‘path of the paddle’ will lead…

But whether you paddle or ride an elephant to get outside and camp or practice bushcraft and observation in the natural environment, our main motto is to just “Get Out & Stay Out“!

Part of the Get Out & Stay Out Network ( See the main network site at Get Out & Stay Out.co.uk), Path Of The Paddle features stories and trip reports from our canoe and bushcraft “get-outs” and “stay-outs”, plus reviews of methods and gear for when you’re out there – tents, tarps, swags and hammocks as well as bushcraft camp techniques – how to stay out and be dry, warm and safe. As Ray Mears says, “If you’re roughing it, you’re not doing it right!”.
